Brand new release of EuroLinux Desktop – what will we find in version 9.1?

EuroLinux Desktop

EuroLinux Desktop is a modern operating system that combines the reliability and security of the Enterprise Linux distribution with the look and functionality of Windows® and macOS®. We built it based on the RHEL® 9.1 source code, but made a number of changes to the user interface. It was all designed for use of the system in office work, public institutions, companies, educational institutions, as well as by private users. EuroLinux Desktop comes with 10 years of technical support. Its new version – 9.1 – has just been released, and what does it bring?

EuroLinux Desktop is a system dedicated to individuals and organizations that are used to Windows® or macOS®, but are looking for a stable and secure operating system with many years of technical support, with an appearance and functionality reminiscent of the aforementioned systems.

EuroLinux Desktop

The first version of the EuroLinux Desktop distribution was released in September 2022 and immediately gained considerable popularity, recording more than 100,000 downloads of the installation image in less than 3 months. Now its next version – 9.1 – has appeared What do we find in it?

What’s new in EuroLinux Desktop 9.1?

EuroLinux Desktop 9.1 is one of the few Enterprise Linux systems that offers a Live installation image (ISO Live). From now on, you can test a fully functional system without having to install it on your hard drive. The installation itself can be done after testing, directly from the Live ISO.

We have made a number of upgrades to the new version of the system. In terms of security, the Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) advanced access control mechanism has been upgraded to version 3.4. Development toolkits, databases and programming languages have also been updated: PHP 8.1; Ruby 3.1; Node.js 18. The system provides new policy tools in the libsepol-utils package and support for SHA-256 in the semodule tool. EuroLinux Desktop 9.1 also includes the new Linux kernel version 5.14.0-162.

At the request of users and the community, we have added Geary to the new version of EuroLinux Desktop. It's an open source, free email client that is an alternative to the widely used Thunderbird. Geary offers a very clear and easy-to-use interface. It combines related messages into conversations, making it easy to find and track discussions. It also features a WYSIWYG editor for creating messages using HTML tags.

EuroLinux Desktop at a glance

EuroLinux Desktop provides the look and features familiar from Windows® and macOS®, while providing server-like stability and security. One of the most distinctive elements of the GUI is the ergonomic taskbar, which stores icons for favorite applications, notifications and running programs, as well as date and time information. The system also supports the familiar maximize and minimize windows feature, as well as shortcuts available by right-clicking on the desktop.

EuroLinux Desktop includes the popular LibreOffice suite of office applications, which has been in use for 12 years and is the equivalent of Microsoft Office®. The package includes:

  • a word processor
  • a spreadsheet
  • a presentation editor
  • a vector graphics editor
  • a mathematical formula editor
  • a relational database management system.

The system also provides easy access to more than 2,000 free applications for editing graphics, photography, audio and video, communication tools, tools for developers and administrators, as well as advanced statistical analysis programs, cryptographic, meteorological or mechatronic design tools.

Each of these programs is available for download from the Software application. It works the same way as the Microsoft Store® or App Store® – it's just a click away to install a program.

The system supports a variety of media file formats (mp3, mpg, wma, ts, opus, ogg, mp4, flac, aiff, acc, ac3, avi), as well as open codecs used for popular video files. Each of these formats can be run in the default Totem/Videos system player.

EuroLinux Desktop also provides support for applications in the AppImage format. These are used in a similar way to the familiar Windows® programs with .exe or .msi extensions. It is worth mentioning, however, that with EuroLinux Desktop the AppImage application is always launched from the non-privileged user level, rather than from the administrator level, which significantly improves system security.
